-| THE 28ERS PRESENTS |- FOOD INSECURITY AWARENESS DAY AT UCR

Please Join Us for The 28ers’ May Event @ The Bell Tower: “Food Insecurity Awareness Day at UCR”

– {A Wish List of Needed Items for R’Pantry Can Be Found Below} –

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about the epidemic of food insecurity on our campus that affects both, undergrad and graduate students alike. This is a national issue that affects 67% of students in the United States, but it also hits close to home. Exactly one year ago, an important study was released which reported that 62.5% of UCR students faced food insecurity in contrast to the 42% of students in the overall UC system. (Statistics of this can be found on senate.ucr.edu website). This shouldn’t be totally out of keeping that our food insecurity issues ride so closely to national rates due to the extremely high number of need-based Pell Grant students that attend UCR. As part of the event, we will host a food drive, based on the list provided by the R’ Pantry in order to keep helping our students with food insecurity. We are asking for your help and support, especially given that we know that there are so many compassionate people who are always willing to help others. If you are willing to help our cause with a donation of food please let us know, so we can also pick up your donations.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MONEY IN POLITICS?

There is a clear, quiet but devastating rope of causation that be followed which connects student food insecurity with money in politics. In the days of long past, students receiving Pell Grants and FAFSA could use a strong portion of that support for things beyond tuition and books. But increasingly with the skyrocketing costs of tuition and books as a result of the Great Recession, which pushed the costs of the housing crisis into student debt, students increasingly have less money left for food to buy.

Our organization, The 28ers, aims to build “a movement of movements” to pass a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will forever sever private wealth from politics and create exclusive public financing for all federal elections. In doing so, policies and ideas that best represent the public’s consensus needs will finally be passed into law, rather than a system of ‘legalized bribery’ by the wealthy and well-connected, where policies and ideas are sold to the highest bidder furthering income inequality between the wealthy few and the increasing remainder pile of a precariat working class.

WHERE AND WHEN?

As student members and interns of our student club, “28ers: Getting Money Out of Politics,” we are engineering this event to focus on FOOD INSECURITY AT UCR, which many students are facing nowadays. This event will take place on Wednesday, 29th from 12 to 2 pm on the North side of the Bell Tower at the University of California, Riverside. This event is hosted in order to raise food and supplies for the UCR R’ Pantry.

ABOUT THE R’PANTRY

The R’ Pantry is the byproduct of cross-campus work of both student leaders and campus departments. With the help of the UC Global Food Initiative, we are continuing to build and develop this program in order to provide food, personal hygiene items, and household and infant care items. We have a high percent of students with children on campus; we also aim to increase long term wellness for the Highlander community. We continue to work towards building a community of support so that together we can “End Highlander Hunger.”
