-| THE 28ERS PRESENTS |- PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL$ ?

FROM AMY KLOBUCHAR TO CORY BOOKER . . .

WHEN: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28th, 2019
WHERE: UC RIVERSIDE
LOCATION: Watkins 1101
TIME: 7:00-9:00PM

DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:

The 28ers’ First Public Endorsement of a Political Candidate was in 2016 for BERNIE SANDERS–a politician whose trust and support was easily felt among Americans across the political spectrum, and whose miraculous ascent to becoming the most popular politician in America is now visible and well-documented. Our decision to support him was an easy one given his consistent critique of the Pay-to-Play system of campaign financing and lobbying that has run amok since the dastardly Citizen’s United ruling. He was also the only Presidential Candidate in 2016 to write a 28th Amendment for public financing for all U.S. elections. However, Sanders has not announced he’s running (although, according to The Atlantic, he is expected to announce later this month).

So what about other candidates for President? As of now, here are the following candidates, in order of announcement, who have either created exploratory committee or have have officially launched their presidential campaigns: Elizabeth Warren, Tulsi Gabbard, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Amy Klobuchar. Howard Schultz–a former CEO of Starbucks will be running as an independent. On the other side of the aisle, Donald Trump is widely expected to run again–barring any unforeseen circumstance (impeachments or a “mac-attack”). And no Republican has dared to announce campaigning against Trump’s incumbent run–although many moderates might wish someone would.

This event, PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL$, hopes to inform participants of the past, present and future history of money in politics, and tell a story about each candidates relationship to the Donor Class, and where they are currently receiving campaign contributions–in a system already drowning in dreary muck of dirty money. Still, the emergent and terrifying historical events go beyond Presidential races, which seem to never end. Core members from The 28ers and the student chapter at UCR will present their findings and offer solutions out of this mess–in the short and long-term of the 12 years we have left to reverse catastrophic climate change.

WHO ARE THE 28ERS? WHAT DO WE WANT?

The 28ers is a post-partisan justice movement that is horizontal and hopes to join forces with organizations, communities and kindred spirits to evoke the change that America never knew it needed in the first place. The vision of our movement calls for a one-vote, one-voice democracy by creating a 4th branch of government to oversee, audit and distribute campaign contributions. To do this, we created our own 28th Amendment that was envisioned, drafted and revised over a four-month period. Our Amendment calls for a National Holiday on the election date, and creates a monetary lottery system that rewards voter participation. The amendment, though, is ultimately a people-powered act of legislation that aims to ban corporations as humans, money as speech, and requires all federal elections to be publicly funded, exclusively.

A 28th Amendment that Will Forever Sever Private Wealth from Politics; and to Reverse the Harms of the 1% Done to Our Education, Healthcare, Unions & Worker Wages, Races, Immigrant Rights and the Environment. Our Amendment Calls for a One-Voice, One-Vote Democracy and Involves the Following:

1) A Fourth Branch of Government that Oversees, Audits and Distributes Campaign Funds to Successful Candidates Based on Public Financing from Volunteer-Only Signatures; Branch Auditors Are Directly Elected by the Public.

2) Proclaims that Money Is Not Speech;

3) Corporations Are Not People;

4) To Encourage Voting, Citizens Who Vote on Election Day Are Immediately Entered into Lottery Where 50 Folks Per State Win $100,000, Tax Free. So Who Pays? The Money Is Taken Entirely from Congressional Pay!

5) And Lastly, Our Amendment Calls for a National Holiday on Election Day.

In passing our Amendment, we hope to redress the harms of the 1%, which has held our democracy hostage from the very beginning of our nation’s history. We hope you will join us in this “movement of movements.”
